Flying Fish Reef
A pleasant half-hour boat ride brings you to one of the closest sites to the island of Meis, a reef rated among the best in Turkey.
The rocky reef tops out at 4-5 m and takes its name from the plane lying off its southeast end: an Italian Savoia-Marchetti SM79 torpedo bomber, nicknamed "sparviero/sparrow-hawk", brought down by anti-aircraft fire while bombarding Meis in WWII, resting between 55 and 71 m.
That very deep, very risky wreck dive is for very experienced divers only, and we remind you the current can occasionally reach dive-cancelling strength. For everyone who stays off the wreck, the reef itself is a spectacle of its own.
When the current, usually from the southeast, is bearable, fish crowd the wall on that side: predators such as dentex, giant groupers, barracudas, amberjacks and bonitos will delight you. The site really deserves its "one of the best in Turkey" title.
