What is this wreck?

A Dakota C-47 on the sand

A WWII-era transport plane, the Dakota C-47 was purposely sunk at 22 m in 2009 to create an artificial reef, and quickly became the icon of diving in Kaş. Sitting on the sand with a 29 m wingspan and a 20 m fuselage, its cockpit and wings are legendary for photos, and the cargo bay can be entered with a guide.

The wreck lies in the Lighthouse area, the closest site to the harbour. Easy to navigate and with little current, it is also one of the liveliest patches of water in Kaş: thanks to the nearby fish farm, groupers, sea hares, moray, barracuda and caretta are frequent visitors.

Plane wreck FAQ

About wreck diving

How deep is the Kaş plane wreck?
The Dakota C-47 sits on a sandy bottom at roughly 22 m. Its wingspan is 29 m and the fuselage is 20 m long. The wreck lies in the Lighthouse area, the dive zone closest to the harbour.
What plane is it, and why was it sunk?
The Dakota C-47 is a WWII-era transport plane, purposely sunk in 2009 to create an artificial reef. The goal was a new home for marine life and a new site for diving tourism; today it is the icon of diving in Kaş.
Can you go inside the plane?
The cargo bay can be entered with a guide. The cockpit and wings are viewed from outside, and the most photogenic frames come while gliding over the plane anyway.
I hold Open Water. Can I dive the Dakota?
Because of its depth, the Dakota calls for advanced certification and experience. If you hold Open Water, we recommend gaining deep-dive experience with the Advanced course first; message us your level on WhatsApp and we'll plan it together.
Can I dive the plane wreck on a discovery dive?
No. For safety, discovery dives take place at shallow, sheltered sites. The Dakota requires a valid certification and depth experience; if you want to start diving, we'll map the route together with a discovery dive and our SSI courses.
